Cocina Juan, Maginhawa St.

Feeling bored during my 3-hour break, I decided to stroll a little in Maginhawa. So I walked here and there trying to look for restos I haven’t tried. After around 30 minutes of gleefully sight-seeing (hehe..), I decided to dine at Cocina Juan.

The restaurant serves Central American food with their own fusions. I’m only familiar with some of their dishes (nor can I correctly pronounce most of their names)  so I settled with one of Cocina Juan’s specials, Chicken Cheese Chimichurri (grilled limon marinated chicken covered with cheese and chimichurri sauce; P219). I didn’t really know what to expect since I haven’t tried anything with chimichurri sauce (I think) but, the taste was fairly good (more on the cheesy side, and the meat was tender).

Orders are grilled on the spot so you’ll have to wait for around 15 minutes which isn’t such a dilemma since they serve complimentary nachos with sweet white sauce to appease your angry stomachs a little hehe.. Not to mention, you can also feast your eyes with the artworks exhibited in the area. And who would have the heart to get annoyed when the servers are all nice and smiling. So yeah, the overall experience deserves two thumbs up - good food at wallet-friendly prices, friendly service, and a unique ambiance.

Pino Resto Bar, Malingap St.

Pino serves Filipino Cuisines that are truly mouthwatering at good prices (estimated budget of 250-400/person). The resto is fairly spacious compared to its neighboring establishments in Maginhawa but it still gets packed during peek hours (so you might as well call for a reservation to avoid any hassle). The area is snug with some sort of artsy feel brought about by wall murals as well as framed photographs hanging. The service was also excellent, the waiters were attentive and were clearly trained with the protocols.

What’s on our table: Kare-Kareng Bagnet (Their house specialty. Authentic Ilokano crispy pork belly served with annatto-peabut sauce and bagoong rice; P245), and Bagnet Binagoongan (Crispy Ilocano pork belly served on bagoong sauce, with pandan rice and fried bokchoy; P225)

I really enjoyed the kare-kare, the sauce was thick but subtle which was greatly complemented by the bagoong rice. I also had a couple of bites of my sister’s binagoogan, the fish paste had the right amount of saltiness which went well with the bagnet. Overall, the meal was hefty, university students like me might find their meals a little over our daily budget, but it’s totally worth it.

At the second level of Pino’s premises is the group’s vegetarian restaurant (Pipino) as well as their kitchen studio.

I hate large classes, hindi ko kayang magpaka’active. E kung sa small class nga minsan nahihirapan ako magpaka’active, dito pa kaya? HAHA. Tsaka di mo magiging kaibigan lahat. Minsan pa, nakakaantok. -_-“

Amen to that. Nakakainis yung sa sistema ngayon sa Math17 at sa Physics 70 series.. May large class pa silang nalalaman. Haay..

Spotted these birds at the lagoon a while ago.

Nagulat lang ako sa dami nila hahaha.

Bakit hindi ko pa sila nakikita? Yung mga magulang ko nakita na nila. Eh ako, na halos palaging nasa UP, hindi pa..
